DAY 4 July 12

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is part of the National Shore Line and therefore managed by the U.S. Park Service.  It actually had a visitor center where we bought "sleeping bear" t-shirts (YAY).  The trail was surprisingly hilly and full of snaky turns which we weren't used to but thoroughly enjoyed.  It was lots of fun shifting gears again.  We ended up riding 23 miles total, saw some dunes, saw some pine forests, saw some Lake Michigan and ended up in an artsy little village, Glen Harbor where we had lunch. We then rode back to the car loaded the bikes and drove to this enormous sand dune which we intended to climb.  See photos below.

We did the "dune climb" 620 feet up where we thought we would see Lake Michigan from the top but that required another mile and a half walk, across the dune barefoot.  We decided to skip that and luckily we saw the same view from the scenic drive overlook.  Interesting fact.  Michigan has more sand dunes associated with fresh water than any other place in the world.  I would say it as more pine trees as well but that's just my opinion.

Weather again cooperated and we had a great day.
