June 10-13 2024

 Dennis and I took a supported ride on the Delaware and Lehigh Canals from June 10 to June 13.  I didn't want to take my computer so I didn't post daily as in the past.  Thought I would summarize the trip in one post.  

First, I have to say that Pocono Biking was a fantastic outfit, very professional.  Our two guides, Jim and Tom, were seasoned riders and very familiar with the trail conditions.  We had a fairly small group, three other couples and 4 or 5 women riding in a group depending on the day.  All of the accommodations were really nice, The Inn at Jim Thorpe, the Historic Hotel Bethlehem, and Porches in New Hope.  

Dennis and I had ridden sections of the trail before.  Two years ago we took the train from Jim Thorpe to White Haven and biked back, a very easy trail.  This time we were transported ten miles up river from White Haven and we rode through the Lehigh River Gorge past White haven ending in Jim Thorpe on our 1st day of riding.  Day 2 took us to Bethlehem PA and then on to New Hope where we spent the night and rode back towards Jim Thorpe.  We were transported back to our cars and drove the 3 hours home.

The pictures tell the story.  We enjoyed perfect weather every day.  It was fun revisiting Jim Thorpe and New Hope PA. and seeing Bethlehem, a really nice city, for the first time.

DENNIS WAS NOT THE OLDEST RIDER!!!!  There was an 81 year old guy, very experienced, probably the best rider in the group.

  DAY 7  July 14. Green Bay WI Today was one of our longer drives.  It took us 4 1/2 hours to drive from St Ignace around the top of Michigan on Lake Michigan's shore line.  It was an interesting drive, a few really nice houses on the water  and so many trees!!  Sometimes they form a wall which looks impenetrable.  They changed in density once we hit Wisconsin.   We were able to check into the Hampton Inn at noon so we did and immediately went for a bike ride on the Fox River Trail which stayed paved for 11 miles and then changed to crushed stone.  The top photo expresses city pride.  They have a very nice waterfront area, bars and restaurants and lots of condos. right on the trail.  We rode through some neighborhoods of million dollar homes complete with tennis courts overlooking the river and some condos and townhouses, a real mix.  Outside of the city limits the trail left the river and passed by some big farms.  At mil...

  Saturday July 28 2024 E Syracuse to Conastota Today's ride was hot and dusty.  We expected crowds because it's Saturday but didn't see that many people.  The trail was along the Old Canal which is not used for boating or travel and very few people have homes on it.  So a little boring.  We ended up in Conastota a very little town that was hit by a hurricane about two weeks ago and we saw a little damage from that. There was not one port-a-pot or restroom facility along the way, a 35 mile round trip!! I didn't take many pictures.  But here they are. This is a mural in Conastota and it's reflection. We couldn't believe the speed limit.  Usually it's 15.  I think it's more for the snow mobile riders in the winter.  A good shot of how boring the trail was. Cohoes Falls in May 2018 Cohoes falls in May 2018  Sunday, July 28, 2024 Schenectady to Cohoes This was an exceptionally beautiful part of the canal trail.  Freshly paved, very shady, lots of curves and hills.  We were able to see the Mohawk River at one part and the Cohoes Falls both of which are pretty impressive.  But the highlight of the ride was meeting Jimmy's sisters and families for lunch.  Dennis found the perfect place and time for us to meet.  We were able to ride our bikes from the falls to a neighborhood bar in Cohoes  and meet everyone at 11:30 giving us plenty of time to have lunch and return to Schenectady by 3:00. It took us an extra mile or two to find the car but we were on the road by 3:00 and home at 10:00.   Overall, a great trip!!!
